The regulator - rectifier keeps your engine running. It stabilizes the electrical current generated by the alternator and thus feeds the battery. Because the alternator depends on the speed, it will not be able to supply a constant electrical current. The regulator - rectifier therefore ensures that the battery receives sufficient power and does not exceed it. With a 12V battery, the voltage should not exceed 15V. If it does, the battery and other electrical components will overload and eventually fail.
